The first phase, is expected to last at least two weeks. The demolition and excavation are being carried out by Bhagwan’s Trucking and Equipment Services. Phase one the project is estimated to cost in excess of EC $40,000, said Myrna Hagley, Senior Planning Officer in the Ministry of Health.
Hagley, who is responsible for coordinating the Ministry’s projects, explained that the construction of the new facility is one of its major capital projects for the period 2011 - 2013.
In relation to the other phases of the project, the Senior Planning Officer anticipates that the bidding process for them will take place later this year. Hagley noted that the tendering process is supervised by the Ministry of Works.
As part of the construction of the new St. John facility, the contractors will widen the existing entrance road to the old Health Centre.
They’ll also build retaining walls, erect steps for ambulant patients, as well as construct ramp-access and a new road to enter the facility from the northern wing.
Meanwhile, due to the decommissioning of services at the Gouyave Health Centre, the Ministry of Health has made alternative arrangements for patients seeking care.
For those requiring urgent and highly required services, care and attention will be available at the Gouyave Medical Unit on St. Benoit Street, behind the Gouyave vegetables’ market.
